Horse Racing News: Early Kentucky Derby Favorites Fierceness and Timberlake Post Workouts
Two leading Kentucky Derby contenders, Florida Derby winner Fierceness and Rebel Stakes champion Timberlake, were among 22 graded stakes winners that recorded workouts on Friday morning.
Fierceness (City of Light), a two-time Grade 1 winner, breezed a half-mile in 50.89 seconds at Saratoga. This was the 13th fastest of 18 works at the distance and the colt’s first workout since finishing 15th in the Kentucky Derby on May 4. Trainer Todd Pletcher will be looking to bounce back with Fierceness in his next start.
Meanwhile, Timberlake (Into Mischief), the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes victor, worked a half-mile in 48 seconds at Churchill Downs. His time was the 20th fastest of 88 works at that distance, as the Brad Cox trainee prepares for his next outing following a fourth-place effort in the Arkansas Derby on March 30.
Other notable workouts on Friday included:
- Chi Town Lady (Verrazano), the Grade 1 Test Stakes winner, breezing five furlongs in 1:00.4 at Keeneland.
- Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming), the Pennsylvania Derby champ, covering three furlongs in 37.0 seconds at Churchill Downs.
- Instant Coffee (Bolt d’Oro), the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes victor, working five furlongs in 1:00.8 at Belmont Park.
