Horse Racing News Update: Warrnambool Trainer Savors Horrifying’s Return to Form with Flemington Win

In the world of horse racing, Warrnambool-based trainer Lindsay Smith is cautious about making any bold predictions, but he is certainly enjoying the resurgence of his seven-year-old gelding Horrifying after the horse’s recent victory at Flemington.

Horrifying ($9.50), ridden by jockey Blake Shinn, joined Smith’s stable prior to the May Racing Carnival in Warrnambool earlier this year. After a disappointing debut run over 1700 meters, a spell and some adjustments to the horse’s training regime have since seen Horrifying bounce back with two wins over 2000 meters at Flemington in July and the latest triumph in the Inside Run Trophy (2530m) race.

“We thought we’d be on the pace similar to the other day, and Blake did a great job in positioning the horse,” Smith said. “He trusted the horse’s fitness, and obviously, Horrifying is back to his best, which is a good result for everyone.”

The trainer noted that they didn’t make significant changes to the horse’s preparation in the two weeks leading up to the race, but rather, they focused on keeping Horrifying happy and content at their beachside training facility.

Cautious Optimism

While delighted with Horrifying’s return to the winner’s circle, Smith is cautious about making any grand statements about the gelding’s future prospects. “We’ll see what turns up next,” he added. “This horse likes staying races, Flemington, and the softer ground conditions, so that all played a part in the win.”

Notable Performances

Other notable performances in the race included the effort of Melbourne Cup aspirant Berkshire Breeze ($1.45), who led the field until the home turn but was ultimately outpaced by the determined Horrifying, who prevailed by 2.5 lengths. Jockey Ethan Brown acknowledged that while Berkshire Breeze ran well, the winner was simply too good on the day.

Also catching the eye was the performance of Lloyd Williams’ import, Post Impressionist ($5), who carried the topweight of 60 kilograms and finished less than four lengths behind the winner.

As the new racing season unfolds, horse racing enthusiasts will be keeping a keen eye on Horrifying’s development and the continued progress of other contenders eyeing the upcoming spring Carnival events.
