Gollan Confident Wollombi Can Continue Winning Streak in Glasshouse Handicap
Trainer Tony Gollan is feeling optimistic about Wollombi’s chances of securing back-to-back Listed wins in this Saturday’s $300,000 Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast.
The four-year-old mare, by sire Extreme Choice, made a winning debut for Gollan’s stable at Ipswich earlier this month, and the seasoned trainer is hoping she can build on that performance in the 1400m feature event.
“To get a mare like her, who Yulong [the owners] paid a bit of money for, and to get the job done straight away was good, and they have indicated they want to go another season with her, which is good for us,” Gollan said.
Wollombi, previously trained by the Snowden stable, scored a Group 3 victory in The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington last year, and Gollan is confident she can handle the step up in class for the Glasshouse Handicap.
“The improvement I’d seen in her in two weeks leading into the Gai Waterhouse [Classic] was pretty good,” Gollan explained. “She did really well and she was the only horse to win like she did all day. It was a good win, she’s come through it really well, she looks better, and the bigger track you would think would suit her better second-up.”
The Glasshouse Handicap field includes some formidable opponents, such as The Inevitable, Yellow Brick, Wategos, and At Witz End, but Gollan believes Wollombi is primed to deliver another strong performance.
“We’ll get through the Glasshouse first and then we’ll have a chat about what others plans there are,” Gollan said. “I’ve got a bit of an idea on what I would like to do, but with Yulong it’s a big team effort, so we’ll have a chat about it post-Glasshouse.”
Fans of the sport will no doubt be eager to see if Wollombi can continue her winning ways and secure another Listed victory for the Gollan stable and her new owners at Yulong.
