Horse Racing News Update: Zac Lloyd Clinches Memorable Stradbroke Handicap Victory

In a thrilling display of jockeying prowess, young riding sensation Zac Lloyd captured the coveted Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday aboard the Bjorn Baker-trained filly Stefi Magnetica.

Lloyd, the reigning champion Sydney apprentice, has been knocking on the door for a major Group 1 triumph, and his moment of glory finally arrived in the $3 million feature race. Overcoming a wide draw and a spirited challenge from the tough mare Bella Nipotina, Lloyd expertly guided Stefi Magnetica to a narrow but memorable victory.

“Results speak louder than words, and it’s really good to get that Group 1 on my resume,” an elated Lloyd said after the race. “I’ve had some great opportunities in the last year or so and haven’t been able to capitalize, so to get the job done today in a very big race is very special and hopefully that propels my career to greater heights.”

Stefi Magnetica, who had finished a narrow second in the Group 1 Surround Stakes at Randwick in March, proved her mettle by becoming the first filly to win the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) since La Montagna in 2006. The victory also saw the three-year-old filly emulate the achievement of her dam, Mid Summer Music, who won the corresponding race in 2012.

Lloyd’s father, former top jockey Jeff Lloyd, was understandably proud of his son’s triumph, even though the young rider didn’t quite follow the game plan they had discussed earlier in the day. “He has been crying out to win a Group 1, and to win it in Queensland, my hometown, I couldn’t be prouder,” the elder Lloyd said.

With a six-kilogram weight advantage, Stefi Magnetica ($15) held off the brave Bella Nipotina ($15), with the Doomben 10,000 winner’s jockey, Craig Williams, praising the mare’s gallant effort under her 56kg topweight. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Vilana ($4.80 betting favorite) finished third, two lengths behind the first two.

This thrilling victory is a testament to Zac Lloyd’s burgeoning talent and determination, and it is sure to be a defining moment in the young jockey’s promising career.
